What actually shuts down in Woody Creek between the last aspen leaves and Thanksgiving week? Downtown Aspen thins out as kitchens close for their fall breaks. Down Upper River Road the list of closures is much shorter, and the main item on it is a bus.
RFTA's Woody Creek route, signed WC, stopped running on September 21 and isn't scheduled back until November 23, 2026. That's nine weeks with no dedicated bus. Meanwhile the hamlet's best-known room, the Woody Creek Tavern, still posts the same hours it keeps the rest of the year. Planning these weeks comes down to roads, schedules and the transfer point at Brush Creek.
RFTA's fall service notice lays out the season plainly. Fall schedules run September 21 through November 22, 2026. The Roaring Fork Valley Local runs seven days a week on a reduced off-season schedule, and VelociRFTA BRT also runs seven days a week. Two services stop entirely, the Woody Creek route and the City of Aspen Cross Town, and both return November 23 for winter service. The same notice set the end of the Maroon Bells shuttles for October 18, so by the time this post is out, Woody Creek's route is one of the few RFTA services still waiting to restart.
Valley transit keeps running this fall. It just doesn't come up Woody Creek Road. For anyone without a car or a ride, the route now begins at the Brush Creek Park & Ride.
RFTA's own route description calls Brush Creek the hub. The Roaring Fork Valley Local route page says the Local serves Aspen and Basalt along with other valley communities, and that riders transfer at Brush Creek Park & Ride to Woody Creek and Snowmass services. Its fall schedule runs 09/21/2026 to 11/22/2026 and lists Brush Creek as stop 346. The VelociRFTA BRT fall schedule covers the same dates and also stops at Brush Creek, stop 346, with Rubey Park at the Aspen end.
On RFTA's park-and-ride page, the Brush Creek lot is listed at an estimated 505 spaces, all first-come, first-served, with connections to Local Valley and BRT routes.
From now until Thanksgiving week, a trip into Aspen without your own car has three legs: get to Brush Creek, catch the BRT or the Local, and ride to Rubey Park. Coming home, the last leg up Woody Creek Road is yours to cover. Before you plan a late evening in town around a bus, check the fall PDF schedules linked from RFTA's notice, because the Local is running reduced and adjusted off-season times.
The Woody Creek Tavern opened in 1980 at 2858 Upper River Road. Its homepage, updated October 6, still reads "Open 11 am till Close | Seven-Days-a-Week." The Tavern's own site describes a room with more than 40 years of collected memorabilia, Polaroids covering the walls and a pressed-tin ceiling, and calls itself "content to be down-home and casually comfortable."
Since you can't get there by bus right now, it helps to know a new menu is in place. The Fall 2026 all-day menu has a little of everything:
The drink menu linked from the homepage is still the summer 2026 list. Gift cards are sold in any amount through the Tavern's gift card page. That's handy to know as the holidays come into view.
Seven-day hours carry more weight in a stretch when the drive to Aspen also means finding parking in town, and when many downtown dining rooms are taking their fall break at the same moment.
The other Woody Creek name on the off-season calendar sits a few miles down-valley. The Woody Creek Distillers tasting room is at 60 Sunset Drive in Basalt, open Wednesday through Saturday, 2 to 8 p.m. The bus gap matters less here than it does for an Aspen trip, since Basalt sits on the Local and BRT corridor. You'll still need to get yourself to Brush Creek first.
The tasting room event calendar fills the weeks between now and the WC route's return. From publication day on, it looks like this:
The tasting room is closed on Halloween, which falls on a Saturday this year and would normally be one of its open days. The last three events on the list land after November 23, so for those the WC bus will be back.
The Rio Grande Trail runs through Woody Creek on its way between Aspen and Basalt, and the late-fall question is upkeep. RFTA's trail information page says Pitkin County Open Space & Trails maintains the trail from Emma Road to Aspen. RFTA's published commitment to plow after more than three inches of snow covers only the Glenwood Springs to Carbondale section. Elsewhere, sections may be groomed or left alone depending on conditions. No plowing standard has been published for the Woody Creek stretch this winter, so after the first real storm it's best to treat conditions there as unknown until you see them.
A seasonal wildlife closure starts in the same window, but it doesn't touch Woody Creek. The trail between Rock Bottom Ranch and Catherine Bridge, well down-valley, closes from 5 p.m. on November 30 until 5 p.m. on April 30, with a signed detour. The Woody Creek-to-Aspen stretch isn't part of it.
The bus gap ends Monday, November 23. That's when the WC route returns with winter service, along with the Cross Town route in Aspen. RFTA's Woody Creek route page still shows the summer timetable, which ran June 1 to September 20, so check the winter frequency and hours there closer to the date before planning a commute around them.
So Thanksgiving week opens with the bus running again, the Tavern on its usual seven-day schedule, and the distillery holding Canvas & Cocktails on Wednesday, the gift-crate event on Friday and the bottle sale on Saturday. Until that Monday, a car or a ride to stop 346 is what links Woody Creek to the rest of the valley.
